Murphy Leads Midwest Plains to Win Over Host Team, 7-2

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Tanner Murphy pitched a complete game two-hitter with 16 strikeouts in leading the Midwest Plains squad (1-1) to a 7-2 victory over the Host Team (0-2) in an American Division pool play contest at Diethrick Park in Jamestown on Sunday night.

Murphy set a new 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series record with the 16 strikeouts. The previous record was 15, set in 1991 by Jason Robitaille of LaCresenta, California. Murphy at one point struck out nine consecutive batters and 11 out of 12. Murphy went seven innings, giving up three hits and one earned run with zero walks.

Josh King hit a two-run double to left center to put his team ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning and his team held the lead.

Jamestown opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Jacob Gullo led off the inning with a single and the came around to score on a passed ball. Cortland Haines also scored in the inning on a Kyle Emerson RBI single to give the Host Team a 2-0 lead.

The Host Team will next play the Middle Atlantic team at 8 p.m. on Monday night and the Midwest Plains will return to action on Monday at 2:30 p.m. against the Pacific Southwest Region.
