College Point Advance To World Series Championship
Team erases six run deficit to rally for semifinal win

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Playing each other for the second time in this World Series, College Point, N.Y. (Middle Atlantic) defeated Westchester, California (Pacific Southwest) 11-9 in another thrilling game at the Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old World Series in Jamestown N.Y. at Diethrick Park on Friday night.

With the win, College Point, N.Y. will advance to the championship game against Bryant, Ark. of the Southwest region on Saturday at 1 p.m.

California was leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Matt Perez tied the game at 3-3 for College Point with a RBI-single that plated Diego Gonzalez.

California took the lead in the top of the fifth when Chris Gutierrez singled in a run and then Michael Brown broke the game wide open by crushing a three-run double to left. Ashton Edior also hit a two-run triple inning the inning to push the lead to 9-3 in the six run inning.

College Point began their comeback in the bottom of the fifth. They trailed 9-3 entering the frame but scored four runs on only one hit to cut their deficit to 9-7.

After holding California scoreless in the top of the sixth, the first two batters reached base via walks in the bottom half of the inning for College Point. Joseph Morel singled to score one run and then College Point tied the score on an error by the Westchester shortstop. Adrian Castano was then intentionally walked to load up the bases with no outs in the inning. Diego Gonzalez then singled in the go-ahead run and then Castano got caught in a rundown, allowing Nicanor Luna to also score on the play. In total, the College Point squad put four runners across to take a 11-9 advantage.

Castano got out of a jam in the top of the seventh on the mound for College Point. He allowed three hits in the inning but was able to get a force out at second base with the bases loaded to seal the victory.

Morel was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI. Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with two RBI, four stolen bases and a run scored for College Point.

Westchester was paced by Gutierrez who was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ashton Edior who was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a triple.

This game was a rematch of Tuesday night’s pool play contest between the two teams that had Middle Atlantic winning a close 7-6 game.
